FOR PARENTS | Media
Center Montessori Pre-School accepts children age 2 to 9 years of age.
Our
schools provide experiences that meet the children's needs and stimulate learning
in all developmental areas: physical, social, emotional and intellectual. Children
are naturally curious about their environment, and this provides the motivation
for exploration and discovery. The mastery comes through repetition, which helps
to develop the child's self-esteem, and positive attitude towards the learning
process. Media
Center Montessori Schools use a large variety of concrete learning materials that
are relevant to a child's life experience. Montessori materials offer the child
a built-in control of error, so that he/she may know the joy of finding the answer
on their own. All subjects are inter-related; the child draws a picture (art)
tells a story (oral language), writes down words (written language), and counts
the number of objects (math) and so on. The children learn to observe, experiment,
and to care for their environment themselves. They are eager to work, and this
is what we call it, the Child's Work. They enjoy sequential activities on an individual
basis, and in groups. We use the phonic approach to reading, which begins as soon
as the child has demonstrated his/her Sensitive Period for this skill, usually
around age three. The child may begin by learning the sounds, tracing lower case
letters on sandpaper tablets. Eye-hand coordination exercises (sorting, pouring,
etc.) help the child develop pencil control. Sensory training allows the child
to learn to discriminate color, size, weight and length differences. Math begins
with counting, identifying numbers, attaching numbers to quantities, and so on.
We encourage each child to proceed as their abilities allow, and offer support,
encouragement and assistance as needed. We serve the child.

Policies Discipline: We
see discipline as a means to helping children learn acceptable behavior. We use
a positive approach of modeling and recognizing correct behavior. Our staff sets
reasonable rules and follows them consistently. Most problems can be avoided by
good supervision and interesting, properly spaced activities. When a child's behavior
is disruptive or dangerous to other children or to themselves, we may keep the
child close To the teacher, change his/her seat, or temporarily separate the
child from playmates or activities that lead to problems. Toys
from Home: Your child may bring a special toy, book, or record to
share with the class if she/he feels this need. We offer this opportunity on our
regularly scheduled Share Day, which is Tuesday. However, we cannot be responsible
for these items. We also will gladly accept any toys or materials that your child
may have outgrown. Please do not allow your child to bring gum, fragile toys,
biting animals, guns or war toys to school. Nutrition: We
serve morning and mid-afternoon snacks, which include juices, fruits, vegetables,
crackers, etc. Children on the Full Day schedule must bring their own lunches.
Parents should include food that the child will eat, with an emphasis on good
nutrition. We are encouraging the children to have good eating habits, so no cake,
cookies, or candy, please. The school refrigerator has limited space, so to ensure
the freshness of your child's food, please include an icepack in his/her lunchbox,
and a spoon if one is required. We celebrate birthdays during snack periods. Please
help your child select something simple to serve and healthful for all. Please
also let us know of any allergies your child may have, particularly to food. First
Aid: Media
Center Montessori has first aid supplies. We ask that you prepare an earthquake
kit for you child to be kept in his/her basket, and labeled with first and last
name. Only prescribed medication may be brought to school, along with a written
consent form from the parent or guardian. The consent must include the child's
full name, name of the medication, dosage and schedule, and the name and phone
number of the prescribing physician. Any medication must be clearly labeled. Clothing: Clothing
should be simple and free of complicated fastenings. Please dress your child appropriately,
considering the changing weather. Please label all sweaters and jackets with your
child's name. We also ask that your child have a complete change of clothing to
keep in their basket at all times. In addition, a small blanket and sheet (labeled)
must be provided for the rest period, and replaced with a clean set bi-weekly. Health
and Safety: The
person bringing or picking up your child must sign him/her out, using his/her
full name and the time of either drop-off or pick-up. No child will be released
to a person not authorized by the parent. We must have written authorization for
changes in this respect. (Please see Child Release Policy). It is also vital
that the school be kept apprised of changes in home, work and emergency phone
numbers. We must have on file a current health form, signed by a physician. We
also REQUIRE that the child have certain immunizations and a tuberculosis clearance.
A daily health inspection is given upon each child's arrival at school. The school
can only accept children who are well. The director has the right to refuse to
admit children to the classroom for health reasons. Your child may be sent home
if he/she appears to have symptoms of illness during the school day. In such cases,
he/she will be immediately isolated from the other children and you will be contacted. Please
contact the school when your child will be absent for health or other reasons.
Your child should remain at home if he/she displays any of the following symptoms: a
cold that is less than three days old; swollen neck/glands; runny nose; fever;
unexplained rash or skin eruption; tonsillitis or any other communicable illness;
the child acts listless, drowsy, has a flushed face, lacks appetite, or shows
any other signs that are out of the ordinary and indicate impending illness. In
case of illness or accident while the child is in school, the following procedures
will be followed: 1. Parents will be called immediately. 2.
If the parents and the child's emergency contacts are unavailable, the Director
will determine the next step based on the circumstances and seriousness of the
emergency. These may include: a. Calling the child's physician. b.
Calling the paramedics. c. Taking the child to an Emergency Care Facility. Child
Release Policy: We can only release your child to a person indicated
on your emergency contact form on file at Media Center Montessori. We cannot
accept phone calls as authorization for someone other than listed persons to pick
your child up from school. Only a written note handed to the Director, or the
teacher in charge when you arrive in the morning will allow us to release your
child to said person on that day. A driver's license will be requested as proof
before your child may leave the school.
